Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an inflammation of the joints caused by
disease rather than worn cartilage.
RA often affects the joints of the feet and hands and can cause
severe shape problems.
When RA severely affects the feet, finding the right shoes and boots
can become a major problem.
Footwear needs to be soft and supportive under the whole of the
rear-foot, it needs to hold the foot softly but securely around the instep,
and it needs to give room, free from seams over the toes.
Many types of comfort footwear are designed with RA in mind. They are soft and roomy and are often designed to take a soft, full contact, prescription insoles such as these, made by hospital technicians.
A 2007 study done on the benefits of therapeutic footwear at SalfordUniversity made the following observation.
Unlike any other intervention specialist therapeutic footwear replaces something that is normally worn and is part of an individual's body image. It has much more of a negative impact on the female patients' emotions and activities than previously acknowledged and this influences their behaviour with it.
At Bill Bird Shoes, we are experienced in dealing with RA and are often able to design comfortable, stylish shoes and boots without compromising the fit and comfort.
In the summer, an interesting sandal, with a full contact soft insole and with straps placed strategically can do a lot for a person’s lifestyle and self-esteem as well.
